A Movie worth watching : Delhi 6

Delhi's Chandni chowk rather the whole old Delhi in “Times Square”. This is what it takes to make someone like me to write my first movie review but of course in a not-so “thesaurus English”, just before 20 hours from my midsemester exams.
Rakesh Omprakash Mehra after the success of “Rang De Basanti” comes up with his new film Delhi- 6. A.R.Rahman is once again at his best by giving some exceptional tunes and creating a vibe in the film which makes even a “non-delhite” immediately associate him being in Old Delhi. Delhi-6 truly justifies its title by putting the essence of “delhi-6” in the film. The movie had each and every taste of contemporary India in which the director is an expert. Untouchability or silly superstitions or the media's role in creating controversies or communal disharmony or woman trade in the society or improper bringing up of children, he has filmed everything in this movie. It tries to say that “Swades” could have been made in a better way. It smartly passes the message to the audience. Though in incorporating everything in the movie the subtleness of the movie is lost but still the audience will truly enjoy this 2 ½ hour movie. Abhishek Bachchan finally comes outside the shadow of his father after movies like “Bluffmaster” and “Delhi-6”. His overworked American accent is not that bad to get that he plays the role an NRI in the movie. His chemistry with Bittu, played by sonam kapoor is not that perfect but still the “monkey clad Abhishek Bachchan and sonam kapoor” hug deserves applause.
The dialogues are honestly written which makes the movie worth watching . The movie is successful in disguising people with the whole Chandni Chowk shots which are actually shot on set.
Now for people who don’t want to spoil their exams.
In brief, the movie is about Roshan (Abhishek Bachchan), a typical NRI young man, who comes down from New York to “Delhi 6”, with his grandmother, nicely played by Waheeda Rehman. Roshan finds it difficult to get the atmosphere of Delhi 6 which is actually Chandi Chowk. This is what the movie tries to articulate. Roshan finally decides to stay back in India to fight with the overhyped menace of the “Monkey Man”. Bittu is dying to break free and be a free bird to participate in the next round of Indian Idol. Will Roshan be able to save the day? Or will he return back to his home and stay off these troubled streets of Chandni Chowk? Watch it yourself after exams are over.
Now, if you want to spoil your exams further do watch “Dev d” and quickly fast forward “Billu Barber” to the last 20 minutes for the modern “Krishna-sudama” speech in a self-praise SRK movie.

PS: I'm really having no time left for my exams after watching the movie and managing some time to write my maiden movie review.
PS: Please, pray for me!!!
PS: I'll be coming with more detailed movie reviews and meaningful posts after the exams are over.

hey i see that u liked the movie. I like it too, though not in the grand proportions that u have. There were some problems which i would like to mention as u have already mentioned the plusses in quite a succinct manner. The first problem is that some of the characters are not nicely etched... for example what the hell was rishi kapoor doing in this movie? Someone of his experience and calibre definately doesn't deserve to be whipped around occassionaly just for the mere purpose of doing so. Also the director tries to show too much . Too many cooks here don't actually spoil the broth but they did take some of the vital ingredients away. And the heaven scene....was just plain ridiculous. Some of the reviews i earlier read said that it could have been comfortably edited. I say it should have been filmed at all.

Another reason i feel this will not reach the heights of RDB is one that the problems raised in the movie are not in as subtle manner as to be perfect and second and importantly that the problems do not concern the youth. RDB hit the youth both the hard and the soft way. Rdb told us to stand up and be counted. Wheras, delhi6 talks about religion jingoism....doesnt concern the young; casteism.....who cares; superstiton....nobody of youth will admit to be one; brotherly feud.....among youth , parents normaly take care of that. It chiefly talks about people having narrow minds. People not having narrow minds are likely to shrug the talk delhi6 wants to raise then. And most of the youth have broad minds today, atleast they claim to have one. It ocassionly talks of patriotism which might evoke sentiments, but that talk is also through a 70 year old dadi.. not a blood stained Amir Khan. Rdb connected with youth and became a phenomenon. Delhi6 seems unlikely to do so.

But still all said and done, it is definately a one time watch, certainly better than the usual routine affair bollywood dishes out most of the times.

And about ur mid sems ashish, bestof luck.We engineers generally require loads of them during exams.

The movie I hear is great but I guess the climax is a little muddled-up. Not like rang de basanti. I might see it after boards. And, Best of Luck for your exams :)

good movie?
umm..not really...it's like watch once and done, just like 99% of the movies being made in bollywood these days!....last year in 2008 i've only liked about 4-5 movies altogether!...rest of them were all sucky movies which shouldn't be even released....anyways,so much for last year...this year isn't getting any better either.
swades could've been better? ahhh!!!....what were u thining when u said this? swades is much better than delhi-6.
i too liked the movie, but not to the extent where i would praise it and write a review of it...
i mean the way that the movie is presented is aweesome. the daily problems of the people that happen to a typical indian. but the thing was that there was no conflict in the movie like RDB(even that movie is just watch once and done and then u can watch it sometimes later on in the years of ur life maube after 5 or 6 years later on tv or something, but not like sholay or andaaz apna apna)...
anyways, the music was awesome of course a.r. rahman...but the thing was that the screenplay wasn't that great...all of a sudden some songs came from no where (my fav masaakali, genda fool, and rehna tu, aarti)....the rehna tu promo as a song looked great, but that is not what was shown in the movie...totally different from the promos...it could've been picturized in a better way. i can go on and on and on about the pros and cons about the movie...but im not as good as ashish to write such 'motivating' review!...lol...
and true rishi j i was wasted in the film, but he did his part well...loved seeing waheeda ji in the movie..

and billu barber was a good movie, but not as good as other priyadarshan movies yaar! and the last 20 mins of the movie u said to fastforward to and watch that: hahahaha....that's the one i was groaning and moaning that when will it end...lol....i mean it's like being tortured to just watch SRK for that much time without the camera moving here and there....lol...but it wasn't a bad movie!...

and yea, 'JAI HO' to Slumdog Millionaire! :)

hey sorry for being late in reading the post...but then I watched only a couple of days back..and I have seen it twice till then, considering that I have just seen SM,Dev D and this movie(apart from Aamir and the matrix) this sem speaks volumes of the love that I have for this piece of art

I can sense that, the makers of the movie, would be really hurt, now that movie hasnt done well...I could very much appreciate it...and I very much do believe that the best of the movies are never the biggest of hits,I just hope that this movie does receive the critical acclaim it so richly deserves...and for all those who feel that bollywood isnt coming up with good ones, recently, they havent been able to understand how brilliant some of the under rated gems like DEv D,Oye Lucky,MMJ and now Delhi6 are....

I have written a review of the movie, but thats on a community in orkut...

I guess you can have a look at my take on one of the important issues in the movie....the Ramayana connection of the movie...read i at:

http://pyasasajal.blogspot.com/2009/03/delhi-6and-ramayana-konnection.html

and once again...am glad u liked this movie mate :)
